let's hang on the gram
I am longing for the summer blackberry fields behind our home to burst full of the delicious berries full of sweetness and love for our tastebuds to enjoy! For now I will imagine it is mid summer and I have just picked a fresh batch from the field (but really I just grabbed some on our grocery store run.)
I am a sucker for a delicious sweet jar of jam! But I am always hesitant to buy them because they usually contain a plethora of refined sugar. So when I read about making jam with coconut sugar and chia seeds I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some fresh berries.
It is only just spring here in British Columbia and its many months till the blackberry patches are going to be blooming but I couldn’t wait. I picked up some fresh berries from the store and set off on a chia jam adventure.
Chia seeds are an amazing little nutrient dense superfood. They prized them for their ability to provide sustainable energy. In fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength.”
Don’t be fooled by their size, these tiny seeds pack a nutrient dense punch. I recommend adding them into my clients diets as they are high in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and calcium.
Chia seeds are an un processed, whole-grain food that can be absorbed by the body as seeds. Unlike flaxseeds which you need to grind in order to benefit from their powers.
The mild, nutty flavour of chia seeds makes them easy to add to foods and beverages. you can try sprinkling them on granola, in sauces, yogurt or if you are vegan you can use them as a egg substitute called a “chia egg”. Another yummy treat is Chocolate Chia Pudding, even my husband LOVES it! I can’t keep it in the house long enough to get a scoop.
Now adding Chia Jam to the list of amazing things this little seed can do! I am off to make some waffles for our Sunday Brunch.
